Raid into Pakistan

NZPA-Reuter Islamabad

An Afghan air attack on a Pakistani border post on Saturday could be the start of a campaign to bring; pressure on Pakistan to soften its attitude to the Soviet-backed Government in Kabul, Western diplomats said yesterday. They said there were several possible reasons for the attack which ended three months of quiet along Pakistan’s mountainous, ill-defined border, with Afghanistan. But. the most worrying possibility was that it was the first of a series of planned border incidents to put pressure on Islamabad, they said. Twb Afghan Air Force MiGl7 fighter aircraft flew skm into Pakistan to strafe the Domondi border post, about 100 km north of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, according to the Pakistan Defence Ministry. Many Afghan refugees live in the area which is also a popular crossing point for Mujahedeen guerrillas heading into Afghanistan to fight the’ estimated 85,000 Soviet troops there.
