Turner wins golf title
PA Auckland Greg Turner, aged 18. found the long trek from Dunedin to Auckland well worthwhile when he won the New Zealand junior golf championship at Maunga-kiekie-yesterday. Turner, who for one so young plays to a plus one handicap, completed the 54-hole tournament only three strokes over the card.- ' ; ■' ■■ It was a remarkable performance considering along the way he had to battle a near galeforce wind, hail and rain. After a par 71 first round on Saturday morning he slipped to three over on the first nine in the afternoon. He showed great concentration to recover with birdies on the last three holes to score a par round. Square after nine holes yesterday he dropped three shots on the back nine.
His total of 216 was six strokes • ahead of second placed Bruce Soland (Titirangi). Jamie Kupa (Napier), who was Turner's partner at the Commercial Union Assurance junior world cup at St Andrew’s, Scotland. last year, shared third place with Lee Chandler (Pupuke) and Lloyd Gilmour (Grange). ■ - The schoolboys (under-18) title was won by Grant Waite, from Manawatu with a three-round tally of 224, only 11 strokes over the card. The best round of the tournament was the two-under 69 shot by Lloyd Gilmour (Grange) : ; on Saturday morning. Glen Goldfinch, who will play in this year’s World Cup, partnered by Peter Murphy (St Clair), was named to play in the Australian schoolboys’ championship in early December.
