Market planned at Arts Centre

The Christchurch Arts Centre car-park may become a Saturday market during spring and summer months. An open-air market for arts, crafts, and antiques has been proposed by the centre’s director, Mr Ray Sleeman, who is now asking South Island persons and groups whether they would be interested in obtaining market stalls. “The Arts Centre has considerable potential to’ develop along the same lines as Petticoat Lane and Portobello Road,” Mr Sleeman said.

Instead of a flea market, the venture would be “an alternative selling place for the professional,” he said. A market running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.irii’ on Saturdays might be introduced in December. Normally, it

would run from October to March. “The standard of the goods displayed will play an essential part in encouraging the tourist patronage required,” Mr Sleeman said. The Arts Centre boundary fence could also provide space for artists to display paintings.
