Airline’s tax bill “unnecessary burden’

PA Wellington Government taxes were costing Air New Zealand about $9 million a year, about one-third of the airline’s loss for the current year, said Labour’s spokesman on transport, Mr F. M. Colman. He said he condemned taxes that were an unnecessary burden for the airline facing higher fuel costs and: increasing competition at home and abroad. He also criticised the intention of Air New Zealand to cut costs by reducing services. “Domestic travel tax and aviation fuel tax should both be abolished in the interest of a more economic operation of Air New Zealand," Mr Colman said. “The Government is not helping by the imposition of these taxes, nor in its delay

in presenting the Public Expenditure Committee’s report on the airline’s finances and any action resulting from the Domestic Aviation Review, completed earlier this year," he said.
