Siltex to close factory

PA Wellington Siltex Trading Co., Ltd, the Wellington fashion clothing manufacturer, is to close with a loss of jobs for 16 staff. Workers were given a week's notice of dismissal on Tuesday. A company statement said that alternative jobs within the industry had been found for all staff. Staff had been advised that the garment manufacturing

division of the company would cease operations on September 9. Siltex Trading had been a leading fashion manufacturer in New Zealand for many years and had also successfully exported to Australia. The company statement cited “ever-increasing wages and costs without any complementary increase in productions, shortages of skilled trades people, difficulties with the Australian market and an ever-diminishing New Zealand market” as the main reasons for closing.
