Prospective midwives leaving N.Z.

More New Zealand nurses now train overseas to be midwives than are trained here, according to the Nurses Society. Five years ago about 140 nurses trained as midwives each year in New Zealand, but this year only 27 have enrolled. This is partly because nurses are now required to have basic maternal and child-care training before taking the course. There may also be financial restrictions, as boards usually sponsor nurses to take the course. More than 27 nurses are leaving New Zealand to train as midwives overseas, according to the society. The number of nurses enrolling in midwifery dpiirses overseas is also increasing.
