Ferrymead proposal

A steam train running between Christchurch and Ferrymead was one promotion suggested this week by a visiting director of an Australian museum, Mr P. M. Hiscock. A visit to Ferrymead yesterday by Mr Hiscock and a group of Victorians was part of a Melbourne tourism promotional campaign which is visiting New Zealand cities. Mr Hiscock runs “Sovereign Hill,” a recreated goldmining

town of the 1850 s which is Australia’s biggest manmade tourist attraction. Ferrymead had tremendous potential, although a lot of work was still needed, he said. Railways, trams, and the nearby sea made the site ideal for transport exhibits. The steam exhibits and fire engines were particularly impressive and better than anything he had seen in Australia or Britain, said Mr Hiscock.
