London Zoo’s giant female panda, Ching Ching, which nearly died last year from a stomach disorder quietly eats bamboo shoots in her pen as keepers anxiously wait to see if she is pregnant. Tests indicate that Ching Ching, which has been artificially inseminated, could give birth within a few weeks. The friendly panda which is eight years old, was presented to a former British Prime Minister, Mr Edward Heath, while he was on a visit to China in 1974.
