Motorists not wearing seat belts

Christchurch drivers are lax about wearing their seat belts. In a month-long campaign by the Ministry of Transport, more than a quarter of the motorists stopped were not wearing the belts. Mr E. E. Dunlop, the senior chief traffic officer, said he was disappointed

about the number ot notices issued during the campaign, which was restricted to the urban areas. During the campaign, traffic officers stopped 1258 motorists and discovered that 356 drivers and 80 passengers were not wearing seat belts. Offence notices

were issued to 224 people. Mr Dunlop said an alarming number of people were not wearing seat belts and so more attentions would have to be paid to this. Blitzes covering other aspects of driving are planned by the Ministry, but Mr Dunlop would not elaborate.
