New cup favourite
NZPA Sydney The top New Zealand stayer, Koiro Trelay, has taken over from Kingston Town as a favourite for the $310,000 Melbourne Cup, according to a leading Sydney bookmaker. Bruce McHugh, one of Australia’s biggest doubles bookmakers, disclosed yesterday that weight of money had forced him to promote Koiro Trelay from 8-to-l to outright favouritism at 6-to-1. lan McHugh’s latest market for the Cup, to be run at Flemington on November 3, Kingston Town. — Australia’s greatest stakes earner — has eased two points to share second favouritism at 8-1 with Hyperno, which won the race in 1979. A spokesman for McHugh said Koiro Trelay was easily the most heavily supported Melbourne Cup candidate since betting started five weeks ago. The spokesman said there had been a "flood” of money for the stayer, coupling him with the top Caulfield Cupchances, particularly the New Zealand horses, Axeman and Langeland. He said Axeman had been backed for a fortune to win >.he Caulfield Cup (2400 m on October 17.
