American city to ban ’Boks?

'NZPA Washington American rugby officials may have to find another venue for the match between the Springboks and the United States national team planned for September 26. They have already moved the match from New York City, after the Mayor (Mr Edward Koch) refused municipal grounds. City officials in Rochester, in upstate New York — named on Saturday as the new venue — came out yesterday against holding the match in their area. Rochester’s police chief, Mr Delmar Leach, had said at the week-end that it should be cancelled because it posed a threat to public safety. The Eastern Rugby Union, host to the Springboks for their three-match tour, said

on Saturday that it had signed a contract for the unofficial test with the Rochester Flash, the local soccer team which leases the muncipally owned Holleder Stadium. After meeting Mr Leach yesterday afternoon. Rochester’s City manager, Mr Peter Korn, told the NZPA: "Because the city leases the stadium to the Flash, they are responsible for maintaining and running the facility. “We have urged them to reconsider, and told them that if the city had been in the position of signing such a contract, we would not have done so."
