New Ambassador to Iran
PA Wellington New> Zealand’s new Ambassador to Iran will be Mr Donald-Harper. . Announcing the appointment yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs: (Mr Talboys) said the new appointment was important in continuing a valuable relationship for both countries. -“Most New Zealanders now appreciate the importance Of the Middle East as a market Tor our primary produce and as a source of oilbased fuels,” Mr Taiboys said.
.“In the course of just a few years Iran has become our fifth or sixth export market, taking some 110,000 tonnes of lamb last year plus other meat products, and a large quantity of wool.” Mr Harper, a career diplomat, joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1956 and has served overseas as private secretary to the Ambassador in Washington, as second secretary in London,
first, secretary in Kuala Lumpur, Deputy High Commissioner in Singapore, Con-sul-General in Los Angeles, and High Commissioner in Apia. He has recently completed a term as High Commissioner in New Delhi.
Mr Harper is Wellingtonborn and educated, graduating from Victoria University of Wellington with a Masters degree in political science. He will take up his appointment in Teheran early next month.
