28 charged; protest sequel

Nelson reporter

Thirteen of the 28 people arrested in Nelson on Saturday in connection with the visit of the Springbok rugby team, were from outside the Nelson district.

The 28 appeared in the District Court at Nelson, yesterday morning, on charges arising oiit of incidents. Most of these relate to the Hotel Rutherford and adjacent streets where the Springboks stayed.

Only one person — an antiprotester — admitted his guilt to Judge Headifen and he was fined $6O for behaving in a disorderly manner. He was said by .the police prosecutor. Sergeant P. B. Grooby, to- have thrown a water-filled bag at anti-tour protesters, but his counsel (Mr P. C. Gilbert) said the water-filled bag had come out of the protesters’ ranks and had hit the defendant on the leg. He had picked it up and thrown the bag. with what little water it contained. back at the crowd.

Of the other 27, 16 pleaded not guilty and 11 entered no plea.

Nelson district defendants were remanded at large without bail to September 8 as a nominal date, and the remainder were also remanded to September 8 on bail of $4OO.
