Riccarton council delays jobless survey
The Riccarton Borough Council has delayed an unemployment survey recommended by its community and development committee.
A meeting of the council decided last evening that the committee further discuss what form the survey should take.
Cr A. B. Harman said that at best the proposed survey would produce generalities.
The community and development committee had recommended that the local work-force be surveyed to find out the numbers unemployed, their ages, and their skills.
“If the Labour Department is doing its job it will have that information,” • said the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr R. W. J. Harrington).
"I would hope the whole thing will not be dropped,” said Cr.'G. R. Marriner, chairman of the community and development committee.
L.P.G. tanks Two large L.P.G. tanks will be. installed at the Cha-
tea u Regency Hotel site in Deans Avenue. Riccarton.
The council approved the installation of two 3700-litre tanks on the Deans Avenue side of the hotel.
“We are all a little apprehensive at this stage but I am convinced that all measures. for public safety have been taken into account,” said Mr Harrington.
The hotel’s owners were happy with a request by the Council’s building inspector that walls be built alcwig Deans Avenue and the south side of the tanks, he said. A building permit would also be needed and the siting of the tanks would have to be approved by a dangerous goods inspector. Bad, debts The council wrote off about $2OOO in bad debts on the sale of electricity last year. . . ' . This was the last time the council would have to face such , a loss, said Cr P. D. O’Meegan. chairman of the electricity committee. The number of bad debts would be substantially reduced in
the future because of a bond, he said.
