PA Wellington i The Wellington City Couni cil decided by one ’vote last' i evening not to close streets i near Athletic Park on August 29 when the AU Blacks meet the Springboks in the second test, The council, in a resumed debate — adjourned last week to check the legality of , the proposal — voted nine to eight against the closing of : the streets. The proposal had been put by Cr Rosslyn Noonan, who cried when the result of the .vote was known. During the hour-long debate. several councillors expressed fears about possible violence and bloodshed if the test was played. The meeting accepted a long amendment by the Mayor of Wellington (Sir Michael Fowler) calling on the Rugby Union to abandon the match, and urging the police to advise the union that it must do so because of the danger to people and ’ property. The amendment, asking people to act in a “lawful and responsible manner,” was carried by 16 votes to one against. . . ■
