Gloomy view of Ice capability
Wellington reporter The Oceanographic Institute's 1982 Antarctic programme has had to be cancelled because it cannot get even a small 6m boat down to the Ice. The Minister of Science and Technology (Dr Shearer) painted a gloomy picture of the institute’s capacity in the Antarctic when he opened the institute’s new building in Wellington yesterday. He said, “It is worrying that 25 years after our scientific research in the Antarctic began, New Zealand has
less of a marine capability in the region than it did then.” He said it was serious that New Zealand should have this problem as the international biomass project to study the biological life of the Antarctic was now well under way. “It is even more serious because the continent could soon be the centre of an international search. for energy and minerals. For good political reasons, New Zealand needs to be able to make its scientific presence felt in the Ross Sea Dependency.”
