Man on change of murder
A man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a woman who was killed by a shotgun blast in the garden of her home in Greenpark Street, Hoon Hay, yesterday morning. She was Kay Eveline Van Olphen, aged 43. married, of 32 Greenpark Street. Mrs Van Olphen’s daughter, aged 10, was home at the time of the shooting and telephoned the police at 9.30 a.m. \ '
The woman’s two older sons were both at school. Police sent to the con-crete-block house, in a quiet back street off Hoon Hay Road, found a double-bar-relled shotgun in a drain not far from the house.
- Mrs Van Olphen had been pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor, said the officer in charge of the inquiry. Detective Senior-Sergeant A. B. Dalzell. Soon afterwards detectives apprehended a man on foot less than a kilometre from the house.
He had been walking along Lincoln Road towards the city, said Mr Dalzell. The man. aged 45, was questioned at the Christchurch Central Police Station, and was arrested just before 2 p.m. He will appear in the District Court this morning charged with the murder of Mrs Van Olphen.
