TV ownership
Sir,—R. J. Taylor (August 11) advocates that “at least one” television channel should be handed over "to private enterprise." There is much room for improvement in New Zealand television, but I wonder how R. Taylor justifies giving so much power to so fe.w. An alternative policy, which I have previously advocated. is that for some small sum, say $5 per year, as many New Zealanders as possible should be encouraged to become shareholders in one television channel. They would then elect a director and, hopefully. his policy would not be solely directed towards making maximum profit from advertising by concentrating on programmes with a crude appeal to the largest possible audience. If one allowed a few rich men to control a private channel. profit might become their main motive, but to thousands of small shareholders the quality of television would be the main concern. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. August 17, 1981.
