Forests and employment

Sir,—At a recent seminar in Auckland, Mr Venn Young (Minister of Forests) attempted to justify the Forest Service's decision to opt for selective logging of virgin native forests in the central North Island. Conservationists have for many years sought the preservation of these small remnants of outstanding scenic, recreational and wildlife value. The Minister stated that logging must be continued for the

social and economic gain of the region and to provide employment for the local work force. However, an advertisement in “The Press.” (August 12) offering a five-year contract for a logging gang in the central North Island clearly shows the deceit of such a claim. Unless of course, the Minister considers Canterbury part of the central North Island. I think not. It is time the Minister and his department woke up and realised they cannot continue to ride roughshod over our remaining virgin native forests on the pretence that regional employment depends on it— Yours, etc..

G. A. TAYLOR August 14. 1981.
