Welcoming letter
Arrangements were being made yesterday to deliver copies of a letter of welcome from more than 3000 Christchurch people to the visiting Springbok team and its management. The letter was the idea of Mr G. M. Edmonds, who said he did it because he was displeased with “the way things were going." He had the support of the Christchurch spokesman for the Society for the Protection of Individual Rights, Mrs E. Sutherland. Together, they manned a booth in Cathedral Square on three successive days. The letter says: “Gentlemen, we the undersigned citizens of New Zealand, warmly welcome you to the city of Christchurch. Al-
though we may not agree with certain policies adopted by many different political systems we do not believe that you as a small, group of sporting individuals can be held responsible for the policies of your Government. “We wish to assure you that we also are not responsible for the decision of the Christchurch City Council to treat you in an insulting and discourteous manner. We apologise for the behaviour of our elected representatives and others.
“As the numbers attending your rugby matches will show, there are many thousands of New Zealanders very pleased to have you in their country. We wish you good luck, exciting rugby, and better understanding.”
