Rowe sets new record
NZPA Brisbane The New Zealand swimmer, Paul Rowe, set a new Australian record time to win the men’s 200 m butterfly final at the Australian winter swimming championships on Saturday. Rowe, who now swims for the Canberra Sports Institute, won the event in 2min 2.685, breaking his own record, which he set in Melbourne last month, by I.lls. The new time ranks Rowe seventh in the world in the event this year. Anthony Mosse, of Auckland, finished seventh in the same event in 2min 8.915, more than a second faster than his heat time. Rebecca Perrott, of Wellington, won the unofficial bronze medal in the women’s 100 m freestyle final. Perrott, who was the second-fastest qualifier for the event, recorded 59.28 s to finish third behind Australia’s Suzi Baumer, who recorded 58.475. Perrott did not start well and was in fifth place in the first lap but her tall frame pulled her through the water to give her a finishing time just a shade under her heat time of 59.545. Because Perrott is a visitor to the titles she cannot officially claim third place: Liz Grant, of New South Wales, took the bronze medal in 59.535.
