Stranglehold broken
Bay of Plenty broke Auckland’s nine-year stranglehold on the New Zealand women’s interdistrict squash title at North Sh re on Saturday. Auckland,. g~ing f r its tenth straight victory, bowed out to Bay of Plenty on a countback of sets after the matches were tied 2-2. Susan Devoy engineered the victory by beating Annette Owen 10-8, 3-9, 9-0, 10-8 Auckland fared better in the men’s section with an easy 4-0 win over Hawke’s Bay-Gisborne. Ross Norman showed his true quality with a 9-7, 9-0, 9-2 win over a lethargic Stuart Davenport. An injury to Canterbury’s
Craig Hibbert probably cost his side third place. Hibbert injured his hand on Saturday In the play-off for third and f urth against Wellington, the matches were tied but the northern side won on a countback of sets. Rod Hayes continued his consistently good form with a 9-5, 95, 9-2 win over David Oakley. Bryan Simpson also won for Canterbury, beating Andrew Sinclair.
Only points separated the Canterbury women’s side in their match with Waikato for fifth and six. The matches were tied 2-2, the sets 8-8, but Canterbury scored 106 points to Waikato’s 101.
