More barbed wire?
From KEVIN McMENAMIN
A decision has yet to be made about whether barbed wire will be laid at Carisbrook for tomorrow’s match between the Springboks and Otago. The commander of the Dunedin police district, Chief Superintendent M. J. K. Ford, said last evening that the decision would depend on the behaviour of “certain people” over the next two days.
He could not rule out the possibility of barbed wire being installed on the embankment sides of the field, as happened at Invercargill’s Rugby Park on Saturday. Mr Ford said that he knew of two different demonstrations planned for tomorrow. One, to be led by church groups, would be a silent march and vigil from an open park, from the southern end of Dunedin to St Paul’s Cathedral, which would take the marchers away from Carisbrook.
The second demonstration, said Mr Ford, would involve the “more active" groups who intended assembling at the same place. However, he would not know what they had in mind until after they met the police today. Carisbrook appears to be one of the more secure rugby grounds of the Springboks’ itinerary and Mr Ford said he was reasonably confident that the match would proceed uninterrupted.
