Win for Bay of Plenty

PA Tauranga With the full-back, Greg Rowlands. landing four out of four penalty kicks at goal, Bay of Plenty built on a 6-0 half-time lead to beat Manawatu, 12-7, at Tauranga on Saturday. By comparison with the sharpshooting of Rowlands, the All Black first five eighths. Doug Rollerson. managed only one of his six kicks at goal and his general play also suffered from ill-directed passes and one or two kicks charged down at close quarters.

Inspiring a strong Bay of Plenty forward effort was the former Manawatu captain, Kevin Everleigh, who has admitted that his shift to the Bay this year was to some extent influenced by the prospect of playing a Ranfurly Shield challenge. Saturday’s win has given Bay of Plenty a tremendous boost for the challenge against Waikato to be played at Hamilton next Sunday. It was only in the last 10 minutes of the game that the

Manawatu forwards overcame the home opposition.

In this period, the prop, Gary Knight, broke away from the front of an attacking line-out to score wide out. but that only narrowed the gap to 12-7 and Manawatu could not score a second time to take the match. For Bay of Plenty. Rowlands kicked four penalty goals. For Manawatu, Knight scored a try and Rollerson kicked a penalty.
