Waimairi County rates
Sir,—lt will surprise me if Fendalton ratepayers are not appalled at their rate demands issued this week by Waimairi County. Council discussions such as those reported when rates were struck mean little to the average ratepayer until they are translated into dollars and cents and I think most people supposed that their property revaluations would not necessarily mean similar percentage increases in their rates. It now transpires that, for Fendalton ratepayers, this was a naive and child-like belief. There are many who would like to hear something understandable to fill the silence in which these swingeing demands have been calmly sent out by Waimairi. A higher rate, applied to an increased valuation, results in our rate demand rising 46.85 per cent. If this means that, within 12 months, Waimairi requires between 40 and 50 per cent more revenue to conduct its affairs, one must ask whether the county is being administered with efficient economy. — Yours, etc.,
H. W. SIMPSON. August 7, 1981.
