Audit of levies
PA Wellington The . handling of money raised by levies from Bank of New Zealand site boilermakers will be investigated by an independent auditor appointed by the Federation of Labour.
The audit is expected to take several weeks. It follows up reports that members of the Wellington Boilermakers’ Society had been refused information about the distribution of levies said to total more than $lOO,OOO collected between December, 1979, and March this year. When the society’s executive met on Thursday with the Federation’s vice-presi-dent, Mr E. Thompson, a report was presented giving details of the levies.
Mr Thompson denied he was under pressure to resign because of the investigations.
But one member of the society's executive said the assertion that $103,000 had been raised from the 41 boilermakers on the bank site last year was not correct. He said there had been only one continuing levy, for almost $20,000 to support workers on the Mangere bridge site, plus a series of smaller ones.
“There is no discrepancy; the extra money was not collected, that's all.”
