Law, order ‘not the issue’
The Christchurch Catholic Commission for Justice and Development has rejected attempts to depict anti-Spring-bok tour protests as an issue of law and order. “We reiterate that the issue remains solely a moral one. that of the injustice of apartheid.” said the commission's chairman, the Rey. Barry Jones, after an executive meeting on August 3.
“It is clear that both blacks and whites in South Africa regard the tour as an endorsement of apartheid,” he said. “To demonstrate the level of opposition in New Zealand we believe that we must continue to protest for as lorfg as the Springboks are in this country.”
