Anglican youth synod in Chch
About 100 young Anglicans from Canterbury and Westland will attend New Zealand’s first youth synod in Christchurch this week-end.
The synod is being organised by the Anglican Diocesan Youth Activities Council, and delegates from the 72 parishes in this region are expected to attend. A council spokesman, Mr Alan Black, said that the synod was organised to allow young people the chance to discuss issues affecting the Church and to gain experience of the Church at synod level.
The ages of delegates will range from 13 to 25, and observers from other parts of New Zealand will see if similar youth synods should be organised in their regions.
Several remits to Saturday’s synod want greater youth representation and participation in the decisionmaking processes and bodies within parishes and each diocese.
The parish of Ashburton is concerned about the decline in numbers of young Anglicans within the Diocese of Christchurch. Another remit
calls on Radio Rhema to make its programmes more attractive to young people. The youth synod will be presided over by the Bishop of Christchurch, (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) and will be held at St Mary’s Church Merivale, on Saturday. A barndance will be held on Friday evening and there will be a special youth service in Christchurch Cathedral on Saturday morning.
