Accord on plan
Mr B. N. De Vere, a property developer who wants to have a new shopping centre built in Sumner, said yesterday that he and Sumner residents were thinking along the same lines about the suburb’s future shopping needs. “We hope we can create an even greater village atmosphere than is there at the moment,” he said. A first-stage redevelopment at the intersection of Nayland Street and Wake-
field Avenue would include car-parking, a supermarket, and four or five shops all to be completed before the end of this year, said Mr De Vere after a well attended Sumner community meeting to discuss the plan. After the first stage had been completed “we will have time to consider how to deal with the front of the project.” Mr A. L. Bellerby, president of the Sumner Residents’ Association, said that
the meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the project had been “a great success.” A motion on whether there should be any redevelopment had been carried, with only a few dissenting votes. The development of later stages in the project would be proceeded with after design consultations between Mr De Vere, his architects, and representatives of a residents’ association sub-com-mittee.
