Schools to close early
PA „ Dunedin Some schools near Carisbrook, the venue of Tuesday's Springbok match with Otago, will close early to ensure the safety of pupils walking home. Macandrew Intermediate and Caversham Primary School will close at noon on Tuesday on the advice of the ' police and the Otago Education Board. . In a letter to parents, the principal of the Caversham School, Mr B. St John, referred to. problems near rugby grounds where there have been Springbok matches. “I have estimated that
about half of the pupils have to pass Carisbrook or live in the immediate vicinity of Carisbrook and would have to go home after school to streets that could be closed by the police or could be filled with demonstrators.” he said. “Therefore, on the advice of the Otago Education Board and the police, your school committee has decided to close Caversham School at noon, or earlier if the need arises, to allow pupils home before any build-up of crowd begins." Mr St John appealed to parents to collect their children from school or arrange for them to be picked up.
