Passat for Nissan in 1983
An entirely new Passat passenger car. yet to be unveiled by VW. has been selected by officials of the Nissan Motor Company of Japan as the first production model produced by Nissan in
Japan for Volkswagen-werk A G. Present plans call for production to start in April 1983 at an initial monthly rate of 4000 to 5000 units. “
The final agreement regarding the model, start up date and volume was reached in Tokyo early in May. In December last year when the original agreement was signed Nissan were looking at various options of both Passat and Audi models.
Nissan has declined to disclose at this time the actual local content ratio, which will undoubtedly have a
great bearing on these made-in-Japari VW cars. But initially, it has been confirmed that the engines and transmissions will be supplied as complete assemblies from VW.
Most of the initial production will be sold in Japan through Nissan Dealers although there is a possibility that the Passat will be exported to South-East Asia.
