Labour pledge on Maori TV
PA Wellington A Labour Government would move to ensure that the proportion of Maori and Polynesian radio and television programmes reflects population numbers, says Labour's associate Shadow Minister of Broadcasting (Mr J. J. Terris). Mr Terris said that Labour's Maori and Polynesian broadcasting policy was committed to assisting the preservation and promotion of native language and culture. “Under Labour, urgent consideration will be given to the establishment of a daily, five minute network television news bulletin to be broadcast in prime time in the Maori language subtitled in English." he said.
The bulletin would focus on news of interest to the Maori people. "Labour will also give priority to the establishment of a Polvnesian commercial
radio sta’tion for the expression. enjoyment, and understanding of Maori and Polynesian cultures." Other aspects of the policy would give consideration to the better placement of ■ existing and future Maori television programmes. A current affairs journalist would be attached to Television New Zealand to cover items of interest to Maoris and Polynesians, Mr Terris said.
