N.Z. diet

Sir,—Professor Beaven's article “Many of today’s food fads have basis in faith, not fact," (“The Press," August 1) reviewed plant. vegetarianism. I would like to add that a growing number of people, particularly the younger .members of our society, are graduating to a diet free from flesh foods, basically for humane reasons. For instance, for the production of veal, bobby calves are taken away from their mothers and constrained in dark holding cubicles, and fed synthetic food in order to produce anaemic white meat. Also, ,'njiore people are becoming ajvpre of the cruel aspect of bat)tery-farmed hens, and use instead eggs from free-range hens. We in New Zealand are! blessed with an abundant milk supply, a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and cheeses, and the availability of herbs, beans apd nuts. Used wisely? as an .“alternative” diet, it .Constitutes not only a health, [ideal, but a humane one. /Yours, etc., NATALIE/ TAYLOR. August 1, 198JL.
