Tenders called for railway bridge

Tenders have been called for the construction of a new railway bridge alongside the present one on the line near the Kaiapoi exit from the

northern motorway. “It will be a big job, but there will be little or no disruption to services,” said a spokesman for the engineers’ department of the Railways in Christchurch. the bridge will be of four spans, and 60m long. The_

spans on the present bridge are sub-standard and some piles are “a bit shaky.” When construction begins, it will be round the existing bridge. A speed limit will be placed on the single track which crosses it. The new model will be on the same alignment, but the new piles will be wider than the existing ones. Pre-cast beams will be lifted into position on the opening day.
