Canty retains Stevenson Cup

Canterbury easily retained the Stevenson Cup when it beat Otago. 13-5, in their annual snooker and billiards contest at the week-end.

The presence of Dale Kwok (Otago), who won his three matches, kept the score close in the snooker, Canterbury winning. 5-4, but the powerful Canterbury billiards trio of Dave Meredith. Ken Giles and Brian Kirkness, gave the team 8-1 victory in that section. Meredith, the Canterbury and South Island champion, was surprisingly beaten by the experienced Lance Napper. However, Meredith hit peak form against Ron Brass and scored breaks of 149, 108 and 126. Kirness had two century breaks against Napper and another against Russell Young, while Giles had a break of 104 and Young had an unfinished break of 103.
