The economy
Sir.—The juggled figures for inflation pretend an annual increase of 16 per cent but my budget records from chasing supermarket specials, for necessities only, show percentage increases:— milk. 56 per cent: soaps,- etc.. 52 per cent; butler, 51 per cent; ice cream, 50 per cent: fruit, 49 per cent; bread. 48 per cent: meat. 42 per cent; biscuits, 38 per cent; chicken, 33 per cent; pasta, 33 per cent; cereals. 32 per cent; eggs, 30 per cent; tea, 30 per cent; baby food, 22 per cent. By planned inflation and devaluation. Mr Muldoon has achieved wage cuts for pensioners and other low income families more vicious than those which provoked the hunger riots of the early thirties, when prices were actually falling—Yours, etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON. August 3. 1981.
