NZPA-Reuter London The Iranian Prime Minister (Mr Mohammad Ali Rajai) emerged yesterday as the successor to the deposed President, Abolhassan BaniSadr, building up a huge lead over three rivals in results from the presidential election, the State radio has said. The outcome of the balloting on Saturday will tighten the grip of the Muslim fundamentalist clergy on the country.

The former President, now in hiding, was toppled in a bitter political struggle with fundamentalists determined to wipe out all public opposition.

The radio reported that nine people died in violence during the voting, including seven Revolutionary Guards. Outside the country, diplomatic missions in Vienna. Bonn, Munich.and Ankara were the target of attacks by opponents of the regime. The radio, monitored by the British Broadcasting Corporation said that election results from 154 out of 270 constituencies gave Mr Rajai 9,585,901 votes as against only 378,231 for his nearest rival. Abbas Shaybani, 297.642 for Ali Akbar Parvaresh, and 176.104 for Habibollah Asgarouladi.
