N.Z. pianist eighth
PA Sydney The New Zealand pianist, Patrick Obyrne. aged 25, of Auckland, has finished eighth in the Sydney international piano competition at the Sydney Opera House. Chia Chou, aged 21. of Canada, won the competition. Endre Hegedus, Of Hungary, was second and Catherine Vickers, of Canada, third. Fourth was an American.
Daniel Blumenthal, with David Owen Norris, of England, fifth, and Liora Ziv-Li, of Israel, sixth. Chou, already a prizewinner in European competitions in 1979-80, received $lO,OOO, a recording contract with E.M.I. and a recital tour in Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia. He will also receive engagements and television ap-
pearances in North America, Mexico, Europe and Hong Kong.
The results were based on cumulative marks awarded to the competitors for solo recitals, proficiency in chamber music and accompaniment and two concerto performances. ' Chou’s contribution to the first stages of the competition was considered outstanding.
