Hockey victory

Canterbury had a meritorious 2-1 win over Wellington in a representative men’s hockey match in Wellington yesterday. Both goals were scored early in the first half by the left wing, lan Riach, and from then on Canterbury kept its goal mouth clear in spite of a barrage of penalty corners only one of which was successful. The final score was due in no small part to the splendid defence of the goal-keeper, Dave Stuthridge, and the left back, Robin Wilson. Canterbury’s lack of effective dribbling by the inside right, Balvant Bhana, into the tactically advantageous right flank cost it an even greater winning margin. The right wing, Warwick Shillito, was rarely used at a stage in the match when his area of the field should have been exploited. The Wellington goal was scored by the full-back, Phil Benfield, from one of more than 20 penalty corners awarded in the match. Results.-—

Canterbury 2 (I. Riach 2), Wellington 1 (P. Benfield). Canterbury B 2 (R. Smith, R. Schoeman), Wellington O. Canterbury senior reserve 4 (J. Carnoutsos 3, R. Archer 1), Wellington 2 (V. White 2).
