Most trainers happy with spring cup weights

NZPA Melbourne The New Zealand trainer, Dave Enright, was elated with the weight of the Brisbane Cup winner. Four Crowns, in the $310,000 Melbourne Cup (3200 m which will be run at Flemington on November 3.

Kingston Town, 60.5 kg. heads the weights, which were issued yesterday, half a kilo ahead of Ascot Gold winner. Ardross.

"I expected more than that." Enright said.

Four Crowns, which won the Brisbane Cup (3200 m at Eagle Farm last month with 52.5 kg, was alloted 54kg lor the Melbourne Cup. "He was weighted in the Brisbane Cup before he won the P. J. O’Shea Stakes over 2200 m so I am rapt,” Enright said, speaking from his stables at Foxton, in New Zealand.

“I expected him to get a kilo or a kilo and a half more,” he said.

Enright said Four Crowns had been back in work for a week and he would probably give the six-year-old his first start in New Zealand in September. "Bart" Cummings was content with Hyperno’s 58kg. "He couldn't have got any more,” said Cummings.

Hyperno has two kilos more than when he won the Cup in 1979 and will carry a half-kilo less than when seventh in last year’s Cup. Cummings’s other main Melbourne Cup candidats — Belmura Lad, Kankama and Real Force — were given 53.5 kg, 53kg and 52kg. Belmura Lad won the 1977 A.J.C. Derby (2400 m and Real Force was second in the V.R.C. Derby (2500 m last vear.

Kankama is to be retired to stud and will not race in the Cup. Don Sellwood, the New Zealand trainer of third topweight. Drum, which has 58kg, was more than happy with the six-year-old’s weight. "That's realistic," said Sellwood from his Hastings home. "He won the Auckland Cup over 3200 m with 57.5 kg so he's really only been penalised a half-kilo.’ he said. "He has started roadwork and will start racing in September," he said. Most other trainers were happy with the weights. Peter Haves, son of the Adelaide trainer, Colin Hayes, who trained last year’s Melbourne Cup winner, Beldale Ball, was surprised at the 56kg allotted the South Australian St Leger winner, Lovelace Watkins. “His weight puzzles me as he won the St Leger, was third in the Adelaide Cup and hasn’t raced for 12 months,” said Peter. But Haves’s stable was happy with the weight of A.J C. Derby and Sydney Cup winner. Our Paddy Boy, which has 57kg. "We thought he would get 56kg but we are satisfied with that weight," said Peter.

The V.R.C. handicapper; Jim Bowler, said he was impressed with the outstanding quality of the New Zealand entries.

“They all have good form,” Bowler said. “There are more overseas horses and it is always hard to handicap them." Speculation, a four-year-old Sucaryl gelding which is now at the Wayne Walters stable at Seymour, has 56kg. Speculation has won nine races and been placed five times. In two attempts over 2200 m he has won one and was second, beaten by a neck, in the other after running on at the finish. Speculation has won a 2000 m weight-for-age race in New Zealand and was raced for seven months last time in.

The top New Zealand stayers, My Blue Denim and Ring the Bell, have 55kg. My Blue Denim was second in last year’s Melbourne Cup and this year's Sydney Cup and Ring the Bell won the N.Z. Derby and also the Canterbury Guineas and Tulloch Stakes in Sydney.
