London market turns easier

Share prices on the London Stock Exchange last week were a little easier over a broad front; although trading was quiet, little resistance was noted, dealers said.

The pressure of U.S. and U.K. interest did not prevent Government bonds from rising during the week, because of buying interest at the lower levels.

Banks, property shares, and insurances reflected the general trend in the face of interest rate worries. Oils were dull, but electricals rose — ahead of a Government decision on allowing private companies to com-

pete with British Telecom in providing services and operating private networks. Gold shares were weak, in line with the bullion price. The Australian sector also slumped.

Closing prices on Friday of a selection of issues were:— Ampol, 86&; ANZ, 324%; NSW, 183% ; BHP, 840; Dalgety, 299%; Elder Smith 265; Fletcher 110; MtLyell 114; NthßH 182%; Plessey 345%; RTZ ord 527% and regd 527% ; Trans Dev 68%; West Mining 290% ; BAT 365; Distillers 215; Glaxo 368; ICI 258; Marks Spencer 127; PandO 122%; Prudential‘A‘ 222; Reedlnt 235; Shell Transport 380; Unilever 551; War Loan 27%; Deßeers 715; Lloyds Bank 400.
