Worcester Street houses
Sir. —I wish to join Alison Holcroft (July 16) in expressing the hope that the Church of Christ Scientist will show greater concern for community values in their plans for the
Worcester Street houses. We in New Zealand have lagged behind the United States and Europe in recognising the value of historic buildings not just as a link with the past or as a means of enhancing the distinctive character of a city, but also as tourist attractions. Closer to home. Sydney's conservation area. "The Rocks." illustrates the tourist and commercial benefits which can result from preservation. Christchurch is fortunate in possessing many fine old buildings which add greatly to her charm. We have the opportunity to create our own conservation area with the Arts Centre and Museum as a focus. It would be sad if we recognised the value and potential of what we possess when it is too late. A church may be built anywhere; an old building once demolished is lost forever.— Yours, etc., L. LOCKHEAD. Julv 19. 1981.
