Heavy demand for produce
Shipments of wool to China this vear are predicted to be three" times the volume shipped through the Port of Lyttelton last vear.
Already this year about 65.000 bales have been shipped from the port to China, compared with last year’s total of 26,000 bales. The Soviet Union is expected to import about 250,000 bales of New Zealand wool this year but, so far. only 29,000 bales have been loaded aboard Soviet-bound vessels at the port. One shipping agent commented to the effect that, perhaps. Canterbury does not produce a sufficient quantity of the type of wool that the Soviet Union requires. Meat exports through the port, however, are booming and it could be a near-record year for meat loaded. During May and up until mid-June. the port handled 8200 tonnes of frozen meat for the Soviet Union. Japan. Korea, and the Middle East. The Lvttelton Harbour Board is confident that meat exports will remain at a high level for some time as local cool stores were still full at mid-June. EXPECTED ARRIVALS ACT 2.
