Top ski racer out for rest of season
One of New Zealand's top skiers, Kate Rattray, had a nasty fall on Sunday and will be out of action for the rest of the season.
The 18-year-old Christchurch girl has torn ligaments in her leg, which has now been encased in plaster.
She will thus miss the chance to improve her international ranking in next month’s Europa F.I.S. series at Mount Hutt and Coronet Peak.
Miss Rattray, runner-up in the women’s Reizensteins Cup for the 1980 national skiracing circuit, was a member of the New Zealand A team in Europe last northern winter, and in one World Cup downhill race at Haus, Austria, finished only 6s behind the winner.
However, another downhill specialist, .Anna Archibald (Canterbury),'has decided to
postpone an operation on her fractured wrist and will contest the Air New Zealand Trophy races at Mount Hutt over the week-end.
Miss Archibald is among 15 women and 55 men entered for the event which will be the first of the national circuit races — and the first real test for the new Mount Hutt race department (led by John Armstrong) which is running them.
Men’s and women’s slaloms will be held tomorrow with'the giant slaloms on Sunday. Races in both disciplines begin at 10.30 a.m.
The first men’s seed for the slalom is made up of the New Zealand A team members, Mark Vryenhoek, Roland Kuhn, Dean Stewart (all Canterbury), Allan Fraser (Tekapp) and Bruce Grant (Queenstown). An interesting aspect is the inclusion of a special seed of Scott Siemers and Dave Pick (United States) running , immediately after the five in the first seed. All seven racers will also contest the giant slalom, together with the talented Nelson racer, Mark Fulton. Further New Zealand A team members in the national slalom champion, Fiona Johnson, Mandy Vryenhoek, Christine Grant, and Miss Archibald make up the first seeds in both the women’s slalom and giant slalom. The North Island is also having its first circuit race this week-end with the Turoa Hpmestyle Cup (two-run) slalom on Saturday. Turoa is now skiable from top to bottom and about 60 entries are expected.
