Hospital board plans abortion building
The pressure on staff at Christchurch ‘ Women's Hos-. pita! because of the increasing number of abortions is unlikely to be relieved/until the Health Department approves' plans for a- relocatable building which would extend the service. The Health Alternatives for Women group asked the North Canterbury- Hospital Board what plans had been made to cope with the demand. T.H.A.W, said that a ‘proper" abortion clinic for Christchurch was overdue. "The board was allocated a grant to improve its abortion facilities;" said a spokesman for the group, Ms P. Owen.
The board’s information officer, Mr D. Dwyer, said that a relocatable building had been proposed. by the board, and initially the department had ..approved, it. However,. the ? department was now checking' building details, and the bdard was waiting to hear back; - /
The board's medical super-intendent-in-chief. Dr R. ;;AFairgray, told a health services committee meeting last week that the staff(at Christchurch Women’s Hospital were being "physically and cmotionally” strained'*by the increasing number^of abortions they . had,, to perform. ■■■ ■ .
