Perkins named in S.I. team

The young Linwood centre, David Perkins, will make his South Island rugby league debut in the national championship match against Central Districts at Wingham Park, Greymouth, on July 26. Perkins impressed in Canterbury’s narrow loss to West Coast at the same vanue yesterday and has taken the place filled by Peter Klink earlier in the season. The back-line is otherwise unchanged from those which opposed Auckland and France.
However, several alterations have been made to the pack. Among those overlooked are the 1981 Kiwi test hooker, Alan Rushton, and his team-mate on last year’s New Zealand tour to Britain and France. Barry Edkins. The prop position regularly allocated to Rushton has gone to Rex Dalzell.
South must beat Central to retain any chance of winning the inter-districts title and playing in the 1982 Tooth Cup series in Australia. On Saturday Auckland remained unbeaten with a 32-12 victory over Northern at Huntly. To top the points table South has to defeat Central and Northern and hope that Central can upset Auckland: the over-all winner would then be decided on scoring percentages.
