Ashworth aid Hayes return
The inclusion of the captain, Don Hayes, and the loosehead prop, John Ashworth, in the Canterbury rugby team to meet Hawke's Bay at Lancaster Park tomorrow are the only changes from the team that convincingly beat Marlborough, 34-9, last’ Wednesday. Both players missed the Marlborough match through injuries and their recall, now they are back to fitness, was not unexpected. Hayes, who had a sprained ankle, ran freely in training yesterday and Ashworth's pulled hamstring has mended more quickly than was first thought.
John Masefield, who made his Canterbury A debut against Marlborough, has retained his position on the flank with Dale Atkins going, to the reserves. The Marist prop, Pat O'Byrne, has given way to Ashworth. The team is: Robbie Deans; Brett Oetgen, Allen, Simpson; Kieran Keane, Wayne Smith; Steve Scott; Peter McLaren; Hayes, Graeme Higginson, Albert Anderson. Masefield; Ashworth, Mick Powley, Bill Bush. Reserves — Backs: Gary Barkle, Rod Latham, Craig Green, Mark Mclntosh. Forwards: Gwynn Williams, O'Byrne, Dave White, Atkins.
