Linwood in rugby trophy play-off
All the interest in the final round of the C.S.B. Cup in senior rugby on Saturday was in the performances of four teams competing for the last three places in the eight who will play off for the C.S.B. Trophy. Belfast made its place secure with a rousing performance against Lincoln College, which had been beaten only once previously, and which had already made certain of winning the cup. University A had to beat the well-performed Marist
team to win a place, and was down. 0-4, with little more than a quarter-hour to play. But University, a patchy team this season, wore its brightest colours in the final stages and won, 12-4. At the start of play, Linwood and .Shirley were locked in eighth place, but Shirley had an advantage of eight in the points differen- • tial which is taken into account should teams finish level. Shirley, playing an early game, beat Albion by 21
points to three, giving it a total of 231 points scored. 184 against — a differential of 47. Linwood, which met University B, later began with a plus margin of 21, and so had to win by 27 points to edge Shirley out of the main competition. It might have come from a Boys’ Book of Rugby stories: in the last minute of play the Linwood captain, Ru Koha, scored a spectacular try, which was converted, and Linwood won by 29 points. When section play begins
on Saturday, the groupings will be: Section one, Lincoln College. Christchurch, Belfast and High School Old Boys. Section two. New Brighton; Marist, University A and Linwood. Belfast and Lincoln College met in the day’s main match, played at Jellicoe Park, a fine wet-weather ground but Rugby Park became a quagmire well before the second of the two games ended. It was so bad that the referee, Mr T. M. Hannan, had the wisdom to call time
out on two occasions, to allow two desperate and frustrated teams a chance to cool down.
In this match Phil Thomas, the Old Boys half-back, was named the Cellar Ghost “Player of the Day." An Albion forward. Bruce Bason, was ordered off in the game against Shirley. At Jellicoe Park Dennis Karatea of Belfast had five minutes in the “sin bin” as did Russell Matheson (Albion). With 11 points for Linwood. Rod Latham became the third senior centuryscorer of the season. He is second to Mark Liddicoat, who has 136. Latham’s total is 110. and John Holmes (Lincoln College) has 105. Scores were.—
