Ferry issue raised

The ghost of the longdeparted Rangatira surfaced again at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board with a renewed call for an investigation into the feasibility of reintroducing an inter-island ferry service. The board's general manager. Mr J. A. McPhail, revealed that several organisations had been approached for support for such a service. but the response had been discouraging. Two main groups. the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, declined support. The board’s policy favours a Lyttelton-Wellington ferry link.

The board eventually decided to set up a sub-com-mittee comprising the chairman (Mr J. E. Mannering). Captain R. Fast. Mr 1. D. Howell, and Mrs J. M. Waters, to report to the next meeting of the port develop-

ment committee on the procedures which the board should follow seeking resumption of a ferry service.
