United’s attack strengthened

Christchurch Mogal United lost, 3-0, to Mount Wellington last week-end. But that is not the reason its coach, Mr Terry Conley, will make a change to his team for its Adidas Chatham Cup tie with Woolston W.M.C. at English Park tomorrow. Mr Conley is likely to introduce another striker to increase the pressure on Woolston’s suspect defence. That defence, which has conceded 42 goals in 17 Rothmans League matches, is certainly more susceptible to

demanding, consistent attack than the Mount. “Any change that is made will have nothing to do with that performance,” he said. “Bad marking cost us two goals, but changes will not necessarily be because of that result." The tactical switch is likely to involve Gordon Faichnie or Michael Cantin coming in forsT a midfield player. Woolston’s policy of playing positive, attacking soccer has not always paid off, and

the weaknesses in its defence have regularly been exposed. But Cup games are different. The pressures of the league are lifed for a day, and struggling teams often benefit from the altered match circumstances. United and Woolston have met once this year, in the final of the Rangers tournament. On the same day, Rangers will meet Dunedin City at Rangers Park, potentially another entertaining match. The Rangers coach, John Souter, wants a tighter per-

formance from his team than that which gave Manurewa a 7-0 win last Sunday. A full round of Hertz League matches will be played today. Nomads United will meet Burndale United at Bumside Park, Western will play Technical at MacFarlane Park, Halswell United will travel south to meet Timaru City. CashmereWanderers will face Shamrock at Somerfield Park, and New Brighton will play Northern Hearts at Queen Elizabeth II Park.
